Raw land to ready pad

Concrete Site Prep: Pad Dirt, Drainage & Getting Ready to Pour

If you bought acreage for a shop or barndominium, the first concrete question may actually be a dirt question. Clearing, pad height, compaction, drainage, and truck access come before the finish.

Clearing

Make sure the proposed building area is accessible and that trees, brush, stumps, and debris are discussed before anyone assumes the site is ready.

Building up a pad

Some sites need fill or pad dirt to create the right building area. Ask who is supplying and placing that material and whether it is included in the concrete quote.

Compaction

Proper preparation under the slab matters. Ask the contractor what they expect the pad condition to be before forming and pouring.

Drainage

Walk the property after rain if possible. Show the contractor where water stands or runs. The slab, driveway, and surrounding grade need to work with the way water moves across the site.

Concrete-truck access

Ready-mix trucks are large and heavy. Narrow gates, soft ground, steep approaches, low branches, and tight turns can affect how the pour is handled. Mention access limits early.

Questions to settle before pour day

  • Is clearing complete?
  • Who is responsible for pad dirt and grading?
  • Does the building plan call for specific foundation details?
  • Are plumbing and electrical rough-ins located?
  • Can concrete trucks reach the site?
  • Where will runoff go around the finished slab?

Still looking at raw acreage?

That is fine. Call and describe where the site stands today.
