How Thick Should My Concrete Slab Be?

Thickness depends on how the slab will be used and what the building plan requires. Do not choose a building slab thickness from a generic web chart when a manufacturer or engineer has provided a foundation plan.

Patios and sidewalks

Patios and sidewalks are commonly 4 inches thick. Site conditions and intended use can change what is appropriate.

Shops and heavier-use slabs

A shop that will hold heavy equipment, RVs, trucks, or similar loads usually needs a thicker slab and reinforcement. The contractor should know what you plan to park or operate on it.

Steel and metal buildings

A building slab should follow the building manufacturer's or an engineer's foundation plan. That is the right place to get final requirements for thickness, reinforcement, edges, footings, and anchor layout.

No invented specs here. We do not publish generic PSI, rebar spacing, or engineered foundation numbers because those details should come from the project plan and site conditions.
